Addressing the significant safety challenge posed by roof lights is a critical responsibility for Persons Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBUs). This New Zealand property group recently demonstrated a commitment to this duty by undertaking a major roof safety upgrade project as part of its substantial portfolio. Recognizing that roof lights are a well-known hazard on its industrial and commercial buildings, this proactive PCBU sought a compliant, permanent solution to ensure the health and safety of workers and others accessing their roofs.

The project involved the largest installation of Skymesh in New Zealand, using approximately 3500 linear meters of the safety guard system. Skymesh was chosen because it was specifically developed to address the inherent problem of falls through translucent roof lights, a cause of numerous incidents, including preventable fatalities. Unlike underside mesh intended for construction worker protection or insulation support, Skymesh provides 100% fall protection when installed on top of roof lights.

This installation highlights the PCBU’s commitment to going beyond minimum requirements. Skymesh is tested to the AS/NZ 4389 standard using a rigorous 160kg drop test, more in line with design actions of roofing materials. The use of 75mm x 75mm galvanized 4mm wire mesh ensures durability and allows the system to be visually checked annually as part of a robust Roof Management Plan.

The project had a number of use case variables  and by permanently installing Skymesh on their roof lights, this PCBU has effectively addressed a neglected application that could otherwise have significant consequences, fulfilling their primary duty of care under the HASW Act 2015 to eliminate or minimize risks. This project serves as a leading example of how property owners and facility managers can proactively manage roof safety, extending beyond guardrails or anchor points to comprehensively control fall hazards.
